SouthAfrica cricket is known for its brand which we all know “Fighting Spirit – Never Give UP”. Ever since their readmission to International Cricket in the year 1991, SouthAfrica has always been a dominant force in international cricket arena. It is evident that they currently rank 2nd in Test and 3rd in ODI.
Greatest ODI ever and South Africa greats
Who would ever forget their highest run chase 438/9 in 2006 against Australia, one of the greatest matches in the history of ODI? (Where Herschelle Gibbs played terrific match winning innings 175(111 balls) for SA). It was highest team score then, later Srilanka& England crossed the score. With England currently reaching 481/6 against Australia in June 2018 is now the highest ODI score.
There were great names who were part of SouthAfrica cricket with the likes of Lance Klusener -1999 world cup hero, Match winner – Shaun Pollock, SouthAfrica’s Wall – Jacques Kallis, Youngest caption – Graeme Smith, Ever smiling – MakhayaNtini, Fearsome Allan Donald.. Goes on you can name many.
What next for Cricket South Africa
Already the loss for AB De Villers made a huge difference for the Proteas, SouthAfrica Tour of Srilanka has started in a disastrous note for the visitors. They lost the 1st test in a humiliating fashion by 278 runs. The most critical part was, the way they surrendered to Spin trail against Srilanka with the likes of DilruwanPerera and RanganaHerath. The most embarrassing part was, SouthAfrica folded inside a session during 2nd innings where they played only 28.5 Overs, scored 73runs and lost all 10 wickets in the session. This was their lowest 4th innings score ever.
What hurts the most
What hurts the most was the future of SouthAfrica’s cricket. With current team lack in quality youngsters which was evident that SouthAfrica’s failure to execute the T20 Global League which they planned to start during 2017, due to financial consideration the tournament never kicked off and postponed to 2018. There is a lot of players who are past 30’s with the likes of Faf Du Plessis(34), Vernon Philander(33), Dale Steyn(35), HasimAmla(35), Dean Elgar(31), Imran Tahir(39) who already passes their prime. And there are no players to replace them is the worrying sign for the SouthAfrica’s cricket.
